For years, the standard playbook was simple: submit your sitemap to Google Search Console, wait a few days, and Google would eventually crawl and index your site. That was the workflow. For most of us, it still is.
But search has shifted. People are no longer only searching on Google. They are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity, Bing Chat, and Google's own AI Overviews. These answer engines need to discover and index your content too, and they do not all rely on Google's crawl schedule.
That is where IndexNow comes in.
From SEO to AEO
AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization. If SEO is about ranking in search results, AEO is about making sure AI-powered answer engines can discover, understand, and cite your content.
The difference matters. Traditional SEO assumes a human scrolls through results and picks a link. AEO assumes a machine reads your page, extracts the answer, and presents it directly to the user, sometimes without a click at all.
For that to happen, your content needs to be indexed fast. Not just by Google, but by Bing (which powers Copilot and ChatGPT search), Yandex, and other engines that feed answer systems.
What IndexNow does
IndexNow is a protocol created by Microsoft Bing and Yandex. Instead of waiting for crawlers to find your site on their schedule, you push a notification: "Hey, I just published this. Come get it."
In practice, pages submitted through IndexNow get indexed in hours instead of days or weeks.
The setup takes about ten minutes:
Generate a key (any UUID or random string)
Place a text file with that key at the root of your site
Send a POST request to the IndexNow API with your list of URLs
No authentication tokens, no OAuth, no SDK. On my site, a script reads the sitemap and submits all URLs in one batch after every deployment.
Does it work with Google?
No. Google has not adopted IndexNow. They rely on their own discovery systems.
But here is the thing: Google is no longer the only door to your content. If Bing indexes your page faster, your content becomes available to Copilot, ChatGPT search, and other answer engines that pull from Bing's index.
The traffic landscape is shifting. Relying only on Google Search Console is optimising for yesterday's door.
The practical takeaway
If you are already submitting sitemaps to Google Search Console, keep doing that. But add IndexNow alongside it. It covers the engines that Google does not, and it gets your content into the answer pipeline faster.
Ten minutes of setup. Faster indexing across multiple engines. Better visibility in an AI-first search landscape.
That is not a bad trade.
